Why use iodine to purify water?

When using iodine tablets or iodine crystals, always follow the directions on the label. Often use one to two tablets per gallon of water. Stir the solution well and let it sit for as long as needed.
The use of iodine is an effective way to neutralize harmful microorganisms in questionable water. Iodine is also very affordable, readily available, easy to transport and easy to use.
If you have iodine on hand, you can always be prepared to clean dirty water, but be careful how much you use.
