If you’re hosting a gathering of people who like to drink, there’s always one person in the group that forgets how to open a champagne bottle with a saber. It happens more often than not and is usually embarrassing for both the host and guest at an event when someone makes this mistake. In order to avoid such situations, we have compiled some instructions on opening your favorite beverage without damaging it or yourself too much.

While cracking open a bottle of frothy champagne in virtually any fashion is thrilling, doing it with a saber is considerably more so. The technique of sabrage is said to have originated during the Napoleonic period, when military commanders, including The Little Corporal himself, would celebrate victory by opening champagne bottles in a martial manner.
The most common fallacy about opening a bottle of champagne with a saber, or sword, is that you are physically cutting the top off the bottle. The saber actually breaks the glass, and the tremendous pressure within the bottle takes care of the rest. A sturdy kitchen knife can suffice if you don’t have an official champagne saber or an excellent sword (but will look significantly less awesome).
There are a few things Alton Brown recommends remembering to make this festive achievement both effective and safe: To begin, make certain that the champagne bottle is refrigerated. It should be in any case, but it assures that the glass is more readily shattered. Second, although all real champagne is technically French, you should double-check the lineage since they prefer to utilize bigger bottles, which makes for a cleaner break.
Keep an eye out! And don’t forget to drink!
1: Remove any foil or wire that may be wrapped around the cork and bottle neck.
2: Hold the bottle at a 20-degree angle to the ground in your non-dominant hand, with the cork pointing away from you and others.
3: Hold the saber so that the blunt back edge is towards the neck of the bottle.
4: Quickly slide the saber up the bottle, making contact with the bottle’s top lip with the rear edge of the blade. The top should come off without a hitch.
5: Sip and savor! (Check the first 1-2 pours for stray glass fragments.)
