How to Have a Better Life (By Not Doing Dumb Things)

There are many things you can do to have a better life, but the most important one is not doing dumb things. If you find yourself making bad decisions on a regular basis, it may be time for some self-reflection and hard work.

The “how to stop acting dumb” is a blog post that talks about how to have a better life by not doing dumb things.

A man foot about to step on rake.

When it comes to living a happy life, we often consider the things we should begin doing. The habits that we need to develop. The procedures that need to be improved.

Despite this, studies and anecdotal evidence demonstrate that avoiding unpleasant items has a considerably greater impact on outcomes than embracing good ones.

According to studies, although being a horrible parent has a significant impact on how children grow, being an overly active parent — attending every soccer game, assisting with every project — has a little impact; as long as you’re not aggressive, abusive, or negligent, your children will be OK.

The same is true in terms of health: going for a stroll will not have the same effect as stopping smoking.

It’s no surprise that the Ten Commandments, the core moral commandments, are virtually completely made up of “thou must nots.” If you don’t murder, don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t envy, and don’t cheat, your life will most likely end out OK.

If you’ve ruined your life by disregarding the “shall nots,” you’ll never have a chance to work on the higher “shalls.”

Guys stress about which college to attend… just to leave out after becoming pregnant by a lady. They debate the best professional route… while amassing massive debt that will severely restrict their alternatives. They desire a happy family life… yet they marry someone who will make them unhappy in that and every other way.

While we are preoccupied with figuring out the greatest, most intelligent things to do, it is the things we don’t do — the bullets successfully avoided — that bring us the majority of the way there. You win if you don’t lose.

“It is surprising how much long-term benefit individuals like us have obtained by attempting to be constantly not dumb, rather than aiming to be exceedingly brilliant,” said billionaire investor Charlie Munger.
