Uncles that are cool don’t simply show off their cool talents to their family’s younger members; they also utilize such moments to convey true information. Fortunately, according to certain erroneous astronomical ideas, balancing an egg on its end allows you to fulfill both aims.
The earth rotates around the sun on its tilted axis once a year. Our seasons are determined by this tilt. When our hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, we have winter, and when it is slanted toward the sun, we have summer. However, every two years, we reach an equinox, when the sun is directly over the equator and daylight and nighttime hours are about equal all around the globe.
The vernal or spring equinox, which happens on March 20th or 21st in the northern hemisphere, is one method to mark the start of spring. The autumnal equinox, also known as the fall equinox, occurs on September 22nd or 23rd (this year on the 23rd).
So, how does any of this relate to eggs?
According to legend, balancing an egg on its end was so difficult that it required planetary alignment to accomplish. As a result, the legend arose that balancing an egg could only be done during the equinox.
Fortunately, it’s a total fabrication. Your ability to pull off this feat of agility is unaffected by the equinox. All you need are a few eggs, a flat and smooth surface, and a lot of patience. So, whatever day of the year, teach your nieces and nephews the “science” of egg balance. Alternatively, do it this week on the equinox and make up a full tale about how this trick is only feasible on that day; after all, cool uncles are known for spreading myths and legends.
