In days gone by, the concept of hardihood was about a man’s strength and fortitude. What does today’s definition entail?
As a man, you’re expected to have certain qualities. The “5 principles of masculinity” is a quiz that will help you identify what those qualities are.
We used the term “hardihood” in a piece a while ago, and a handful of readers queried whether it was indeed a word. Not only is it a word, but it’s also a word that’s a lot of fun to pronounce and a characteristic that every guy should strive towards.
There are a plethora of questionnaires available these days to assist you in determining the best sector of employment for your interests and abilities. In 1917, the book How to Choose the Right Vocation dispensed with current concerns like creativity and being a “people-person” in favor of asking men to rank themselves on things like hardihood. While hardihood was a need in certain professions, the book maintained that it was a trait that all men should strive towards. How’s your toughness? Ask yourself these questions and give yourself some time to consider them.

Hardihood has been so closely associated with rashness, arrogance, and unwise bravado in popular use that many people are unaware of its true meaning. This first definition is “boldness and confidence in action, particularly when confronted with difficulty, danger, or disdain; sturdy and persistent bravery,” according to the book.
Hardihood confers physical endurance and, to a degree, immunity from exhaustion by allowing one to ignore the first signs of exhaustion associated with strenuous physical activity or stressful mental application, and to quickly regain one’s “second wind,” making prolonged effort comparatively simple.
Hardihood inspires constitutional bravery in attempting difficult tasks or those with uncertain outcomes; it propels one into actions that require courage and fortitude to undertake; it inspires one to overcome opposition to one’s efforts and to exercise intrepidity without apparent fear of the consequences, to climb over obstacles that would deter conservative judgment or ordinary daring, to grit one’s teeth and make the Herculean effort that leads to success. What could be more beneficial to one’s career than such “stout and relentless courage?”
