Do you know what your Bug Out Bag Checklist is? If you don’t then you are about to learn a valuable piece of survival information. I say this because there are many different types of Bug Out Bags and they all do different things. It’s not what they are designed for, but how you use them that matters.
When we prepare for a disaster or emergency what happens first is the planning. This should include what kind of survival items you should have in your Bug Out Bag. After that it should be something that you carry with you until you are rescued. What is meant by this is that you have to consider all the possibilities. I am going to tell you what those possibilities are.
First on your list should be a Water Bottle. This can be whatever size you have to drink. You should carry more than one though, so that if one breaks, you have another one ready to go. A Water Bottle is one of the most important things to have in a Bug Out Bag. It gives you a way to purify water which can be life saving depending on where you live. Use a lightweight bottle as it weighs less than some heavy duty ones and it will be easier to carry around.
Second on your list should be food. This could be food that you can eat or that you can create with your own hands. If you don’t have the time to cook you might want to consider buying freeze dried foods or pre-packaged. This is also great if you are RVing since it is cheap and you can buy plenty. Just make sure that the foods are organic and real food.
Third on your list should be Flashlights and first aid kits. These are both essential for emergencies and can be a lifesaver if you have them. If you don’t have any of these you may want to consider getting a fire starter kit as well. Having one can help you light a fire in case of a power outage.
Fourth on your list of items you need to take with you in a bug out bag is a first aid kit. This is very handy if you are stuck in a situation where you need to apply first aid. It can come in handy when water has started to boil and there is no immediate heat source. It can also help if you have been bitten by an animal and you need to apply a local anesthetic. It can also be useful if you need to clean your wounds and apply pressure to an area that is bleeding. The amount of first aid supplies you should take with you will depend on what you need them for.
Fifth on your list of what you will need is a map and compass. You may want to have one with global positioning features as well so that you know where you are in case you lose reception of your GPS. If you need to orient yourself, a compass is a good idea because you won’t need to do anything more than look at it. If you do lose reception of your GPS, you can orient yourself by the stars or constellations.
Lastly, you will want to make sure you have some form of shelter. It can be as simple as a plastic tarp that is hanging in your car trunk or as complex as a tent with some stakes built into it. It will all depend on what you need to stay warm or protect yourself from the elements. Some people like to camp out in the woods, so having a bug out bag and shelter to sleep in makes it easy for them. When preparing for a wilderness survival situation, you need to know what you will need to carry so that you can stay protected and prepared.
