This article first featured in the Art Of Manliness ‘Trunk,’ a compilation of interesting things we come across when scouring the vast deserts of the internet.

Todd W. Weaver, a US Army First Lieutenant, sent a letter to his wife and young daughter to be read if he died. When he was murdered by an IED during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan in September 2010, his wife Emma discovered the papers on his computer. The letters are heartbreakingly sad and poignant reminders of our military’s immense sacrifice and the need of cherishing those we love in our life, whether we’re soldiers or civilians.

The letters were placed on photos of Weaver’s widow and their kid.

Dear Emma

Emma’s Letter:

If you’re reading this, I presume I didn’t make it home and, as a result, I wasn’t able to tell you how much I love you again. I adore you, darling, and will always adore you. Take comfort in the idea that I am looking over you right now, even though I am not present. I’m not gone, and I’ll always be there in spirit for you. I understand how difficult this moment is for you, but I also recognize your strength. Never forget that before we were born, God already knew what was best for us. Take solace in this. There was a purpose behind this. You will believe it one day, even if you don’t believe it now.

I want you to understand how valuable you are to me. I could not have asked for a more loving, kind, and gorgeous wife. The moments we’ve enjoyed over the previous several years are some of my favorites. Despite the fact that my life was cut short, I had a life that most people can only imagine. I was fortunate enough to marry the ideal lady. My lovely kid continues to astonish me on a daily basis. I even had two wonderful dogs – at least for the most part. I couldn’t have asked for more. If you’re depressed, remember the good times we had together. Take a look at how lovely our daughter is.

Be brave for her sake. Remind her about her father, and tell her that I adore her more than anything else. Her birth was the most memorable day of my life, and she was the most wonderful thing that had ever occurred to me. Her grin and laughter encapsulate everything good and wonderful about the world.

Tell her that Daddy is now in heaven and will keep an eye on her and protect her at all times. Emma, I adore you. However, you should never be scared to do what you need to be happy. It’s critical that you keep finding happiness in your life. Have trust, even if you believe it’s impossible right now.

Much better times are on the way. You and Kiley have a bright future ahead of you, and I am grateful to have been a part of it.

I’m in love with you. Dearly beloved Husband, Todd

I’m in love with you. Dearly beloved Husband, Todd

Kind regards, Kiley

Kiley, My Sweetheart:

I want you to know how much your Daddy loves you, even if you don’t remember me. When you were 9 months old, I deployed for Afghanistan. It was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do to leave you. You are very important to me, dear; you are definitely a God-given treasure. The day you were born was the finest day of my life. My heart would melt every time I saw you grin. You were my sweetheart; without you, my life would be incomplete.

I’m sad that I won’t be able to see you grow up. But keep in mind that your Daddy is still alive. I’m in paradise now, and I’m always smiling down on you. You are so fortunate to have such a beautiful mother to look after you. Make sure you look after her and assist her whenever possible. Always remember to pray at night and be grateful for all of your numerous blessings. Never lose sight of how valuable and unique you are to so many others. We adore you to the moon and back. When you become older and start school, do your hardest to learn all you can about the world you live in. Always be kind and kind to others, and you will find that the world will treat you well. When things don’t go as planned, remember that God knows what’s best for you and that all will work out in the end.

You have a wonderful and bright future ahead of you. Have fun with it. Take pleasure in it. And keep in mind that your Daddy will always be proud of you and adore you. You are and always will be my sweetheart.

With heartfelt gratitude, Daddy, you
