Did you know that there are some extra hacks to add to your wilderness survival arsenal? We all have them, or at least we think we do. Most of us have heard of the knife, the pocket knife, the hammer, and the screwdriver. These tools are great for a moment, but you need more! So let’s discuss some more hacks that can help you survive in the wild.
First you need to have a way to get water. This means you need to have a way to catch your own water. There are many ways to do this, but the best is to have a sump and a way to purify that water before you drink it. Purification devices like the iodine tablets are great for this. Water that has been treated will stay cleaner for longer and be much easier to get to than untreated water.
Another way to purify water is to use your fire. If you have wood sitting around, make sure you keep the ashes away from the fire. ashes are full of toxic chemicals and can harm your water supply. If you use a propane gas stove or a wood stove, then you can put the ashes in a fire pan or throw them in the trash. Be sure and keep the grate near the fire, so that any smoke that would come out of the fire can easily be filtered out of the water.
Make sure you have a way to cook over the open flame. You don’t want to catch your food in the fire. A good way to make sure that nothing burns is to wrap the food in aluminum foil before putting it in the fire. Also, try cooking on different coals, one on each side of the fire.
Have a way to purify water. This can be as simple as using salt water. Salt water sucks more chlorine out of the water than does fresh water. Most people already own distilled water or use deionized water in their shower and toilets. Just buy some inexpensive tablets at the grocery store or run some of your appliances such as the dishwasher and washing machine through a filter.
Purify the water you use for your dishwashing. There is an incredibly easy way to do this. All you need to do is buy multi-stage selective filtration tablets. These tablets can remove practically all of the harmful particles and microorganisms from your drinking water. The filter also removes chlorine and other chemicals from your water, which will leave it cleaner and healthier to drink.
Get a special filter for your showerhead. Your shower head has little holes where it attaches to your faucet. To clear water from these tiny holes, all you need is a carbon filter cartridge. You can find these at any hardware store or online. Every time you take a shower, you should change the cartridge in order to avoid introducing harmful chemicals into the water you are running through your pipes. A few more hacks to add to your water purification strategy is to change your faucet filters every so often, and use a showerhead filter when it is convenient to you.
There are lots of ways that you can hack your water purification. Of course, if you are on a budget, you can use some hacks that are a little more drastic. But if you want to really protect yourself and your family, you should look into the different options you have. By protecting your health, you can save money, and you can have cleaner water!
