While the people living in dormitories are more or less like the people you will meet at a typical college, there are some differences. The first of these is that they are usually much older than the students who are graduating from high school. This is not because they are necessarily poor people; rather, it is because they have been through a lot more hardship than the rest of us. Because they have endured such things as not having a family to support them and so on, they are generally much tougher on themselves. Some people refer to the people who live in dormitories as “the unlucky few.” But as you learn to survive dorm life, you will realize that this label is not really deserved.
The second thing you need to know is that dorms are not a particularly good place for anyone to spend their time. Most people are there to study, not to sleep. But even if you are interested in your classes and are committed to your studies, chances are you will be sleeping during the day. This can create problems, especially when it comes to your health. You cannot let this stop you.
In addition, there is often a lot of noise. Yes, the school that you are attending may be a relatively quiet place, but there is no substitute for the quiet of a dorm room. You may be able to tune out the noise, but chances are you will still hear plenty of it. This can lead to insomnia, a condition that can lead to fatigue and ultimately to failure. Therefore, you must take steps to ensure that you make it through your first year at college effectively.
One of the best ways to ensure that you do well in a dorm is to build some survival skills. Dorms are usually quite chaotic, with students going to and from school throughout the day. When you go to class, you will meet a lot of new people. Therefore, when it comes to meeting and talking with people, you will have a wide range of people to talk to. Yet, you must learn how to avoid situations that will cause you to have to be too social. If you do this, you will find that you can survive dorm life.
The first thing that you must know is that it is important not to try to fit in with other students. There will be people who will try to get you to join groups or to hang out with them in order to build survival skills. If you do not know how to handle these people, your time at school will be less than enjoyable. If you want to have a good time, you should go by yourself and try to get along on your own. This means avoiding those social groups that you will find around most campus buildings. This may mean avoiding clubs or other organizations that you feel may have nothing to do with you.
Another survival skill for you to possess if you want to survive dorm life is to stay healthy. Dorm life may be very cold or very hot and there will be times when you are ill or even when you become sick. It is up to you to make sure that you take care of your body. Even if you eat well, you should exercise every now and then. This will keep your energy level high and will prevent you from becoming lethargic. If you do exercise, however, make sure that you do not overdo it.
Another thing that you will want to make sure that you have are your survival skills for your safety. There are going to be times when there will be bad situations where you will need to hide and or run from someone. You will want to have a weapon that will allow you to defend yourself effectively in these situations.
Finally, make sure that you are well-organized. Dorm life can be very hectic as people spill everything out on to you. If you find yourself unable to keep track of certain things, such as important papers or an emergency supply kit, you will want to invest in a book or two. The most common mistake people make is procrastinating. In order to succeed, you must be able to act immediately and efficiently when something goes wrong. Learn how to sort through things so that you are able to get them done the minute they arise.
These are just a few of the survival skills that you will need if you want to survive your college experience. If you do not have any of these skills, you may want to consider taking a survival course at a local community college or university. You can also try reading survival books at your local library. As long as you have the knowledge and skills, there is no reason that you cannot survive your college experience. If you can avoid dangerous substances, you should be able to get by quite nicely. Good luck!
