The terrorist attacks in New York and the World in general has made me a survivalist. I am careful when visiting areas of the city where I can be attacked by the police. That is why I have packed in my backpack all the survival items I need in case of emergency. Here are some New York survival tips to keep in mind.

The first thing is, of course, to avoid crowded places. There is always the possibility of getting mugged. But, if you can, avoid crowds and high buildings. If you know you will be visiting the Empire State Building soon, carry an extra bag with you so that you can change clothes and stay out of the madding crowd. Of course, if the mugger cannot see your ID, he may target you anyway.

Another tip is to have a backup water bottle in case you get locked in a place without water. In such circumstances, one bottle will not be enough. You may want to carry more than one. And for the extra bottles, buy plastic or glass bottles with lids so that insects cannot drink from them. You could also use citric bags to carry water to avoid having to use water from a bottle.

When shopping, look for the items that you really need. Carry only what you will use. And if you find some that you think you may need later, put it with the others. Carry more than necessary. Leave some at home and bring just those that you think you will need.

Be aware of your environment. If you are in a disaster area, make sure you are not near anything that can be used as a weapon or a source of food for the hungry. For example, be very wary of garbage cans in flood zones. They are often the source of ill-intentioned people who have guns and shoot at helpless victims. In addition, stick to food sources and basic supplies.

Avoid the large crowds. If you are going to a city with an active shooter, there is a possibility that innocent people may get killed. This is especially true if it happens to be during the busy day when people are going about their daily business. Also, avoid crowded places like malls and subways. These areas may seem safer, but they are actually a lot more risky. It is best to stick to familiar places and go out at night.

Take extra medications. You may think that these medicines are too common sense, but you never know when a major disaster may happen and there is a medical need. As a backup, stock up on some over-the-counter drugs and vitamins.

Have some clean clothes and changes of clothes with you. These will be very important in case you get separated from your group. In addition, bring food items, canned goods and non-perishable food items as well. These can be stored in cans or sealed boxes. You should also include a radio and a flashlight, which you can carry in the event of an emergency.

Open a door for someone who may need to use the bathroom. This is especially true during a disaster when power may be out for hours. Remember, do not open a door if there is something hanging, such as a light bulb. Also, lock doors behind you. It is also important that you keep children away from disaster areas. After all, they are not trained to deal with emergencies.

Avoid hanging things such as Christmas tree lights in your window. Most cities have rules against hanging anything that hangs outside. Also, do not flush water out your toilet or sink. This can pollute the water supply and cause many issues, including disease. If it looks like the toilet may overflow, call a plumber immediately.

When you are in the city, check with your neighbors and see if they are ok. Many people may be vacationing in the city and not aware of the dangers. It is also important that you call the fire department and alert them of any problems that you notice. Do not be afraid to call your neighbors and tell them what is going on in your home. They may be able to help you with this matter.

It is important to remember that New York City is a major city. There are many people that live there and many people that visit on a daily basis. It is important that you follow the survival tips that experts suggest. If you follow these steps, you will have a much better chance of surviving during a disaster in New York City.
