Here are my 15 winter survival tips for the farm, no matter what your geographical area. I have been blessed to live on a farm all my life and I am very aware of how bad or good life can be in the winter. It is my desire that these tips help you as well. You should always be prepared for whatever Mother Nature has in store for you.
One of my first and foremost winter survival tips is to get a good map and compass. These items are absolutely essential items for any farmer. A compass will help you find directions and find your way back to civilization if you become lost. A map will help you see all of your immediate surroundings and give you a general idea of how far away you may be. These survival devices are an absolute must have.
Another of my first winter survival tips is to buy survival kits with everything you could need inside. In my opinion having survival kits that are full of supplies is a good idea because they can hold some emergency supplies like medicines, batteries, shovels, blankets, flashlights, etc. Keep in mind that the survival kits that you choose should include everything that you could possibly need in case of an emergency. Also keep in mind that you never want to leave items that you might need with your farm animals so be sure to include this as well.
Water is very important, so I would also suggest using a water filter. My family and I use a Survival Water Filter that fits on the wall. The Survival Water Filter actually filters the water and then stores it in an external reservoir. This system works great because we never run out of clean water. We also never have to worry about running out of clean water because our water filter always purifies it before we drink it.
The same thing with electricity. You would not want to depend entirely upon your power supply just in case of a crisis. Investing in an extra power supply can be a good idea so you would be prepared for anything. If you have generators then by all means, I would suggest having them. However if you have nothing like this at home, make sure to invest in some batteries.
Always put away a blanket that covers you during the night especially if you have young children. I find that one of the most important winter survival tips I can give is keeping warm and keeping dry. There is no point in having nice clothes and nice socks if you end up freezing to death during the night.
Make sure that you have some sort of a fire going in your house. If you do not have a fireplace then you should invest in a good artificial one. Get some matches and some wicks and make sure that your fireplace is burning well. If you live in a place where winters do not seem to bother you much then this may not be necessary.
If you do not have some sort of heating at home – make sure you do. Most people think that it is okay to be cold but there are those who get seriously sick because of it. Having a heater can also help you if you go out on a long trip with your family. Just be sure to take enough food with you – that is another tip that I am sure that you will never forget.
Now that we have discussed some of the things that you should be taking with you during the winter, let us talk about what you should not be doing. The most important thing that you should never do is forget about your medicine. You need to make sure that you stock up on some of the basic medicines for colds that you can use. I recommend that you either ask around or check the drugstore for medicines.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make is that they try to make sure that they carry more food with them than they actually need. They end up carrying too much food with them and that is why they become really hungry very quickly. So make sure that you know how much food you really need before you go out. Another tip that you should never forget is that you should always have some form of first aid kit with you. There are many different types of first aid kits but one of the most important is that you should always have a cell phone with you so that if you ever get trapped you can call someone for help.
Some of the other tips that you should also follow would be to make sure that you have some form of emergency shelter with you. When I was younger, my family had a lean to the trailer that we could use as an emergency shelter. The best thing that you can do is to invest in a folding camping tent. There are many different types of tents that you can purchase but one of the best is the winter survival tips tent. These tents will provide you with protection from the rain and also from the heat.
