If you have a family with small children, long flights with kids are a nightmare. Always try to leave them with a loved one in the car or on the plane. It is easy to forget to carry snacks and drinks for your little ones. Carry a good book or work out a system where you can keep track of what you need so that you don’t forget anything. This can take the pressure off if you have small children.

Don’t eat or drink anything that is hot or cold. Even water can cause you to become dehydrated. Drink plenty of cold water before you sit down to eat on long flights. Also, avoid spicy food if you can. It will help you stay cool.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes. Most long distance flights have strict guidelines about the size of clothing passengers can wear. Wear clothing that is loose enough to allow airflow but not too loose that it is a breeding ground for sweat. A large hat is a must, as are extra socks. You want to get rid of the sweat so that you don’t have to struggle to keep your shirt on.

Avoid wearing any kind of jewellery that holds water. Wearing jewellery that has water in it will cause you to become dehydrated. Even if you think you are fine, give yourself a rinse with water immediately after you take off your jewellery. Try to remove as much of the water from your skin as possible – this is easier to do if you are in a dry room. If you can’t rinse yourself, try laying down in a sink and filling up a bucket with warm water until you can rinse yourself.

Use an ice pack if you feel that you might end up becoming dehydrated. Some people like to bring an ice pack on airplanes – put it in the bottom of a bag, and it will keep you cooled while you wait for your connecting flight. If you have to stand by a window, use an ice pack between your knees to cool your extremities. These are just a few tips that can help you be more comfortable during long flights.

Try not to drink coffee or alcohol before you go on a trip. Both of these contain caffeine, which can dehydrate you. Even though dehydration is considered to be a normal part of being on an airplane, drinking it during the flight can cause you to become lightheaded or have a stroke. Many airlines have now banned caffeine from being taken onboard due to the serious side effects it can have. If you absolutely must consume caffeine, make sure to get up to 6 cups in a 24 hour period – that way you won’t end up dehydrating.

These tips to get through long flights won’t work for everyone, but they can help anyone suffering from motion sickness. If you experience it frequently, talk to your doctor about medication that can help you. You may have to take it for the rest of your life if you are seriously affected by it – don’t let it get you down. Find a solution that works for you!
